HC Antonio Pierce names Raider who deserves 'more reps'

The Las Vegas Raiders (2-2) were able to get back to .500 with a big win over the Cleveland Browns (1-3) in Week 4.

A big reason why the Raiders were victorious on Sunday was because they had a season-high 152 rushing yards.

Six different players had designed runs, including wide receivers Tre Tucker and DJ Turner and tight end Brock Bowers, but one player made the biggest difference: running back Alexander Mattison.

Mattison didn't receive the most opportunities with just five carries, but he made the most of them, leading Las Vegas with 60 yards (12 yards per carry).

It's safe to say his performance caught head coach Antonio Pierce's attention.

"He's deserved more reps," Pierce said, via Jeremy Bergman of NFL.com, "and he'll get 'em."

Third-year running back Zamir White, a fourth-round pick in 2022, has received the bulk of the carries this season, but he has rushed for just 152 yards and zero touchdowns on 49 carries (3.1 yards per carry).

That doesn't even come close to Mattison's 87 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries (5.1 yards per carry).

Mattison has also been more productive in the passing game, reeling in seven catches for 80 yards and a touchdown compared to White's five catches for 16 yards on the year.

So it won't be surprising if the Raiders move forward with Mattison as their RB1.

Pierce called out his players last week for making "business decisions" in a disappointing loss to the Carolina Panthers (1-3).

He's happy with how they responded.

"I'm proud of the business decisions our team made because they made some really good ones last night," Pierce said. "To see them go out and really take pride in their body of work and our staff keeping everything close together and tight-knit was really a credit to what we're building this offseason and into the season."

Mattison will be relied even more upon in Week 5 if star wide receiver Davante Adams is out once again when Las Vegas goes on the road to face the Denver Broncos (2-2).
