Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs sets an NFL record

On the second play of the second half of a 31-29 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love completed a pass to running back Josh Jacobs for a 3-yard gain, leaving the Packers facing third-and-4 at their 36-yard line.

A nondescript play, but one that gave Jacobs an NFL record.

The reception was the 202nd of the former Alabama ball-carrier’s NFL career, and he became the player with the most receptions without a touchdown in league history.

Jacobs and Gerald Riggs are the only players in NFL history who have caught at least 147 passes without any of them ending in the end zone.

Riggs played in the NFL from 1982 through 1991 and was a three-time Pro Bowl running back for the Atlanta Falcons. He totaled 8,188 yards and 69 touchdowns on 1,989 carries, including a league-leading 397 rushing attempts in 1985, when he piled up 1,719 yards on the ground.

Riggs’ 201 career receptions resulted in 1,516 yards, but none went for touchdowns.

Jacobs’ record-setting reception was his second catch in Sunday’s game, and he had two more to finish with four receptions for 27 yards. Neither of his final two catches resulted in touchdowns either.

A first-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, Jacobs has 204 receptions for 1,500 yards and 1,376 rushing attempts for 5,874 yards and 46 touchdowns.

Since Jacobs entered the NFL, he’s the only player with at least 5,100 rushing yards and 1,500 receiving yards.

In his first season with the Packers, Jacobs has run for 329 yards on 71 carries and caught seven passes for 52 yards.

Jacobs played his first five NFL seasons with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders before coming to Green Bay as a free agent in March.

The Packers play the Los Angeles Rams at 3:25 p.m. CDT Sunday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
