As we move deeper into the offseason for the New York Giants, their focus turns to how they’ll approach building their 2025 roster, particularly where they’ll spend their cap space in free agency.
Last year, the team made controversial decisions, letting Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney leave while opting to sign offensive linemen like Jon Runyan, Jermaine Eluemunor, and Greg Van Roten. Those moves were met with mixed reactions from fans and analysts alike. A year later, the task of improving the roster looks even trickier.
Will the Giants sign a veteran quarterback in free agency? Will it be a short-term starter like Sam Darnold or a bridge option like Justin Fields? Much of that depends on what the Giants decide to do in the 2025 NFL Draft. But aside from Malik Nabers, the wide receiver position is being highlighted as an area to upgrade. In fact, Mason Cameron from Pro Football Focus recently labeled the Giants as the best landing spot for veteran wideout Stefon Diggs in their list of the top free agents' best fits.
“Diggs' torn ACL in Week 8 will make for an interesting free-agency period between the 31-year-old receiver and teams this offseason. Prior to going down, Diggs showed no signs of slowing, on pace to produce his 10th straight campaign with a 77.0-plus PFF receiving grade. With the Giants holding a top-three draft pick, expectations are that they will make a play for one of the top quarterbacks in the class. Pairing Diggs’ experience with Malik Nabers would provide a young passer with quality weapons in the receiving game and ample opportunity to produce quickly.”
Last offseason, the Buffalo Bills traded Diggs to the Houston Texans. As part of the deal, his contract was adjusted to allow him to become an unrestricted free agent following the 2024 season. At the time, many argued the Giants shouldn’t pursue a trade for Diggs, as the team was still rebuilding and couldn’t afford his hefty salary.
But that was last year. Now, Diggs is a free agent, and the Giants have the cap space to make a move. While they could allocate those funds to upgrading their cornerback or defensive line positions—or even to signing a veteran quarterback—those needs could also be addressed in the draft. The Giants already have their No. 1 wide receiver in Nabers, meaning they don’t need to prioritize the position in the draft.
Instead, the Giants could use free agency to address the No. 2 wide receiver spot. Diggs, who was still productive before tearing his ACL in Week 8 last season, could be the perfect addition. Despite his injury, Diggs had 47 catches for 496 yards and three touchdowns in just half a season.
With Darius Slayton likely leaving in free agency, signing a veteran like Diggs, who at 31 years old and coming off a major injury might not command the same salary as he once did, could be a savvy move. The connection between Diggs and Giants head coach Brian Daboll, who was the offensive coordinator in Buffalo during Diggs’ tenure there, only adds to the appeal.
This isn’t the first time Diggs has been linked to the Giants, as speculation swirled in the past about his potential desire to reunite with Daboll. Adding another layer of intrigue, signing with the Giants would give Diggs the chance to face off against his brother, Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs, twice a year.

If there was ever a golden opportunity for the Giants to land Diggs, pair him with Nabers, and give their new starting quarterback an elite receiving corps, it’s now. And the best part? All it would take to bring Diggs to New York is money—a resource the Giants finally have to spend.
