After months of anticipation, the New York Giants finally had their first preseason game of the year on Saturday, August 9, and they came out triumphant, with a 34-25 win over the Buffalo Bills. While the preseason is a great time to watch all of the rookies on any NFL team, for the Giants, this game was an opportunity to finally see new quarterback Jaxson Dart in action.
Dart is part of a large group of quarterbacks in the Giants’ roster this season, and he joins veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston and returning player Tommy DeVito. Wilson is expected to start when the Giants’ season kicks off, but Dart is seen as the future of the franchise.
So, how did Dart perform? Following the game, head coach Brain Daboll described Dart’s performance using four words, and he really nailed it with the description.

Daboll’s four words to describe Dart’s performance were efficient, effective, aggressive and confident. Those are all great descriptors.
For full context, Daboll said of Dart’s preseason showing, “It’s about what I thought he would do. Efficient, effective, aggressive, confident in the pocket. Still stuff we can work on, but he’s doing good.”
Dart, who was making his first appearance in a game in the NFL, completed 12 of his 19 passing attempts for 154 yards and a touchdown. On top of that, he carried the ball three times for 24 yards.
One of Dart’s biggest play, and probably his biggest, was throwing deep to Lil’Jordan Humphrey for a touchdown. The pass was in the air for about 35 yards.
“Dart had an impressive preseason debut, but the pass to Humphrey was the clear highlight,” Frank Schwab of Yahoo Sports noted in a feature out on Saturday, August 9. “Dart looked comfortable for most of his time in the game, though he was a bit inaccurate on a few passes.”
Schwab added, “He had a chance to run the two-minute drill at the end of the first half and did a fair job, getting the team into field-goal range though his third-down pass was a little late, behind the receiver and broken up. That stalled the drive, but the Giants got three points out of it. Jameis Winston took over quarterback duties to start the second half.”
Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post added, “All of it was encouraging for the future of the Giants, who turned to Dart over Jameis Winston as the first quarterback off the bench in Saturday’s preseason opener, a 34-25 win over the Bills.”
Russell Wilson Also Makes an Appearance
Wilson also played in the game, which might be a bit surprising, since teams don’t often play their starters in the preseason. As Schwab describes, “Wilson’s one drive was uneventful. He threw quick, short passes and never took a chance downfield. He completed 6-of-7 passes for 28 yards and his drive ended with a Giants field goal.”
He adds, “It wasn’t exciting but Wilson doesn’t have a whole lot to prove at age 36. The Giants know what they have with him.”
So, let’s just say that Dart and Wilson didn’t disappoint in their first plays for the New York Giants.
