Giants' Abdul Carter proves he's ready to shine brightly

The New York Giants' No. 3 overall pick out of Penn State was supposed to be special. But it would've been fair for him to take a little time to get up to the speed of the NFL as a rookie.

He simply hasn't need that adjustment period, though.

At Giants training camp, Carter pretty much always has looked like the best player on the field, based on reports and highlights.

He's also the player that ESPN's Jordan Raanan wrote looked the best of anyone in camp:

"The rookie edge rusher quickly made it know that he's going to be a big-time player in the league. He drew raves from his teammates, who say 'he's going to be great.' Carter was constantly in the backfield, including on Wednesday when he sacked (Russell)Wilson. As the third overall pick, Carter was expected to be good. This summer validated that belief. The physical talent stood out on a daily basis."

There could be a lot of pressure felt by Carter. He was drafted into a big media market, and because of his college affiliation, there's been the suggestion that he could be the next Micah Parsons (who is only the best young defender on the planet).

The drama built just a little when neither Phil Simms nor Lawrence Taylor would give up their retired numbers to the rookie.

But now Carter is rocking No. 51 and making it look really, really good.

At this rate, some rookie some day is going to want 51 with the Giants, and it'll be up to Carter whether to share it or not.

He already looks that good, like a future superstar and franchise legend.

Things could change, but for now, the Giants couldn't be more thrilled with the No. 3 pick.
