Well, here is an interesting tidbid for your Friday news dump. Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback Geno Smith and his team have reportedly approached the franchise about a new contract extension, per NFL Insider Mike Garafolo.
Currently, Smith is on the second year of a three-year deal he signed prior to the 2023 season. This contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the 2025 season. The Seahawks have already restructured his contract during the offseason to help alleviate cap space concerns.
Garafolo spoke about this situation on Jason Puckett’s podcast:
“They’ve talked about it, they’ve tried to talk about it, I know that,” Garolo stated, in regards to Smith and his team. “That’s been something that’s been broached this offseason. So you know, (that) could be something that gets done before week 1 and is addressed by the team.”
However, Garofolo was clear that he did not get the sense this is a decision Seattle’s front office is racing to get done at this time.
“It didn’t seem like it was imminent on their (Seattle’s) part,” Garafolo continued.
At this present moment, Geno Smith counts for $26.4 million against the cap. Seattle could theoretically extend him to help further reduce his stress to the cap situation. However, age wise, Smith isn’t exactly a spring chicken. He is 33 years old, and going to turn 34 in October.
Granted, his 33 might be a little different than most other 33’s when it comes to quarterback. By virtue of spending so many years as a backup, Smith does not quite have the mileage on his body his contemporaries who have been starting for years have. Still, age eventually catches up to everyone, and Smith has already dealt with some injury concerns this offseason, even if they did not result in anything long term.
