Garrett Wilson has had a front-row seat in the New York Jets attack in his first two seasons and the current campaign with Aaron Rodgers . The change in the dynamic in the locker room is far greater than one can imagine.
Following the Jets’ first win over the New England Patriots since 2015, Wilson spoke with the media. Wilson scored his first touchdown of the season, becoming the only first-round pick to score a touchdown of a pass from the 40-year-old Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
Reporters asked Wilson if there had been any differences between the offense before Aaron Rodgers arrived and now. The 24-year-old smiled and nodded in approval.
Yeah, I ain't gonna fake it. I do. It's a great opportunity for me and the whole receiver group, everyone that's a skill position on offense—to have fun. Garrett Wilson said
Rodgers spoke about establishing a winning culture in the Big Apple franchise; they haven’t proved themselves as a legitimate AFC threat. The Jets won their two games against a team that had a below-.500 record in 223 but lost to last season’s Super Bowl finalists, the San Francisco 49ers.
While some might argue that it was Rodgers’ first game back from a long Achilles injury, the 49ers played without the offensive player of 2023, Christian McCaffrey, and several other starters. Regardless of the hiccup, the Jets seem to be trending upwards, with Garrett Wilson finally catching more passes.
Garrett Wilson will eventually get more chances from Aaron Rodgers
Wilson racked up respectable numbers in his first couple of years with the Gang Green. He crossed the 1000 receiving yards barrier on both occasions, even grabbing the Offensive Rookie of the Year honor.
However, the Ohio State graduate during the offseason revealed a surprising truth that any fan of football could easily differentiate. Wilson claimed that he had to put in the extra effort with Zach Wilson as the Jets quarterback, but since Rodgers took over, he only focuses on being at the right place at the right time.
I [definitely] had to change style-wise, but I would say in a way that's more natural to the way I play. Reacting; believe what you see. Aaron [Rodgers] can throw anything; he can throw it anywhere, so for me, it feels like pure football. I feel like I'm a kid again. Garrett Wilson said
Yet, so far, he has caught 15 total passes for 150 yards—the best was 6 receptions in the Patriots game. Rodgers, on the other hand, calls for fans to be patient because Wilson will eventually see more of the ball.
The entire focus of all three defenses we've played have been taking Garrett away. It's been Mel Kiper's worst nightmare. Been a lot of cover 2. When there's times when we get one high, we try to go to him. But a lot of 2 highs in all three games. They are shading to him, even with stud corner. Aaron Rodgers said after the Patriots win
Up next, the Jets have a meeting with the Denver Broncos at MetLife Stadium in week 4. The last time these two teams met the Jets came out on top in August 2023.
