The Green Bay Packers landed on Brayden Narveson as their kicker for the 2024 NFL season after a long, drawn out, and poor summer kicking competition. The undrafted rookie, who has made just 71.4% of his field goal attempts so far this season (10/14), was claimed by the Packers right after the preseason ended when he was waived by the Tennessee Titans.
Narveson is Green Bay’s third kicker in three years. Mason Crosby played his final season for the Packers in 2022, and Anders Carlson held the role in 2023.
Last season, Carlson struggled in his first and only season with the Packers, who selected him to replace Crosby in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
His performance in training camp last year, in which he was the only kicker, concerned fans and Packers media members. He just was not accurate. His leg was strong, but he could not consistently make his kicks.
After a solid start to the season that saw him make all of his kicks in Green Bay’s first five games, Carlson’s inconsistencies returned. He ended up making 81.8% of his field goal attempts and an absolutely atrocious 87.2% of his extra points.
Because of his struggles, the Packers decided to bring in veteran Greg Joseph to provide competition for Carlson in camp. Joseph ended up winning this competition as he was Green Bay’s kicker on their initial 53-man roster and Carlson was released.
However, Joseph was also released when the Packers picked up Narveson.
Both Joseph and Carlson competed for a spot on the Detroit Lions’ practice squad after the season began. As was the case in Packers training camp, Joseph beat Carlson for the job.
Later, the New York Giants signed Joseph off the Lions’ practice squad when their kicker suffered a groin injury.
In three games with New York, Joseph has made eight of nine field goals (88.9%) and all of his extra points.
The San Francisco 49ers are not off to the start they had hoped for as defending NFC Champions. Multiple star players have suffered injuries and, at 2-3, they do not have much margin for error.
To make matters worse in the Bay Area, their kicker, Jake Moody, suffered a high ankle sprain in their loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
On Tuesday, San Francisco hosted a pair of kickers to compete for the job while Moody is out: Matthew Wright and Carlson.
Wright won the competition and was signed by the 49ers following the workout.
Carlson remains out of a job.
