Former Cowboys' draft bust might be resurrecting his career with top NFL contender

Former Dallas Cowboys' second round pick Kelvin Joseph will be remembered as one of the biggest draft busts the front office has recently had after he was considered a second-round steal when the team made the pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Former Cowboys' draft bust might be resurrecting his career with top NFL contender

At the time, Joseph was considered one of the best athletes of his class but discipline concerns led to him falling into Day 2, where the Cowboys used their usual approach of making high-upside gambles on players with discipline or injury concerns.

Fast forward to 2023, Joseph was traded from the team after he failed to level up amid injuries and off-the-field issues, including being a passenger on a car from which fatal shots were fired during the spring of 2022.

After being moved to the Miami Dolphins, Joseph was released in November and eventually landed with the Seattle Seahawks as a practice squad member.

These days, Joseph is a player for the Kansas City Chiefs, having signed a futures/reserve deal with the team in January. Fortunately for him, it seems like things are going well and he might just resurrect his playing career with the league's top contender.

Below is an excerpt from a recent story from our very own Charles Goldman, which details how Joseph has been turning heads at practice for the reigning NFL champions:

On Wednesday's first play of 7-on-7 during practice, Joseph caught Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes pushing the limits. The play resulted in an interception for Joseph, who has worked almost exclusively with the second-team defense to this point of the offseason. However, it's important to remember that workouts are voluntary at this point and players often jump around based on who is in attendance.

Still, there was a lot of positive buzz about Joseph coming out of the lone day of practice media have been able to attend thus far. Chiefs team reporter Matt McMullen mentioned his interception in his post-practice observations. KSHB-TV's Nick Jacobs and Chiefs Digest's Matt Derrick also discussed Joseph as a standout during practice on their "41 Is The Mic" podcast.

"A very sneaky-good player was Kelvin Joseph," Jacobs said. "Like the guy was all over all over 7-on-7 and team, and he had a lot of deflections and was in good position a lot of the times. And he made that interception on Mahomes."

Joseph could find his way into the 53-man roster of the team to beat in the NFL. One of his biggest calling cards is the value he provides on special teams and that'll surely go a long way as he competes for a spot on the AFC contender.

Watching him play for defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo would be quite interesting as he doesn't shy away from man coverage, which Joseph is built for thanks to his length and physicality.
