Former Chiefs receiver could help fill roster vacuum with free agent reunion

The Kansas City Chiefs seem to appreciate the known quantities when it comes to free agency, as Brett Veach's spending habits tend to favor those players who knows best. The Chiefs have continually chose to reunite with a number of familiar faces year after year—a formula that's worked well for such sustained success—and sometimes it even works with former Chiefs who return for one more tour of duty.

Last season, the Chiefs brought back Kareem Hunt and Steven Nelson after departing several years prior. This offseason, it might make sense to bring back another familiar face to round out the wide receiver room knowing that Demarcus Robinson is a free agent once again.

Chiefs Kingdom needs no introduction to Robinson after spending six years with the team from 2015 to 2021. Robinson was the team's fourth-round draft pick (by former general manager John Dorsey) in the 2015 NFL Draft, taken one round before Tyreek Hill as the team used back-to-back picks at receiver to shore up Alex Smith's options on offense.

Robinson never quite emerged from the shadows for the Chiefs, a player who was always a tertiary target at best in an offense anchored by Hill and Travis Kelce. That said, Robinson was a reliable receiver who has never missed a game (even outside of K.C.) and there's room for a dependable vet in the Chiefs' wide receiver room these days.

Demarcus Robinson's familiarity and utility could make the perfect addition to help stave off free agent losses for the Chiefs.

Although his best season with the Chiefs only yielded 45 catches for 466 yards and 3 touchdowns (2018), Robinson found greater production outside of Kansas City over the last three seasons. Last season, he became an appreciated target for Matthew Stafford with the L.A. Rams and came away with 7 touchdowns to go with 31 catches for 505 yards, good for a career-best 16.3 yards/catch average.

Last season, Robinson lined up wide on both the left and right sides for the Rams to the tune of 700 snaps, but he also has the versatility to slide inside as a useful slot receiver (292 snaps). Robinson is also no stranger to coverage units on special teams and has even fielded the (very) occasional return over the years.

The Chiefs are going to find themselves facing several potential exits in free agency. The contracts for Mecole Hardman, Justin Watson, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Marquise "Hollywood" Brown, and DeAndre Hopkins all wrapped with the conclusion of the 2024 campaign, which means there could be considerable turnover on the roster. It makes sense for the Chiefs to bring back one or more of those players, but new faces will arrive.

Depending on how free agency plays out and how general manager Brett Veach views his departing wideouts, Robinson's overall utility plus his familiarity with Andy Reid and the offense could make him a solid candidate to return in 2025.
