Former NFL running back Eric Dickerson created a little bit of a stir when he told USA TODAY's Jarrett Bell that he didn't want Saquon Barkley to break his single-season rushing record.
“Absolutely not!” Dickerson said, via Bell. “That doesn’t even make sense. Like I told the guy earlier, I don’t want nobody to break my record. He even said if he breaks it, he doesn’t want anybody to break his. I get it.”
Dickerson's nerves have gone away now that Barkley will be rested for the Philadelphia Eagles' final regular season game against the New York Giants. The Eagles want to make sure that Barkley is fully healthy heading into the playoffs since they have the big picture in mind.
Still, Dickerson wants everyone to know that despite not wanting Barkley to break his record, he's still a big fan of the way he plays.
"I'm a Saquon Barkley fan," Dickerson said, via TMZ. "I never thought he would reach his full potential in New York. I'm glad to see him in Philadelphia and glad to see him get 2,000 yards."
With Barkley sitting out on Sunday, he'll finish the 2024 regular season with 345 carries for 2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns. He's been a perfect fit for the Eagles after signing with them as a free agent during the offseason and has helped them win the NFC East.
Barkley became the ninth running back in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season.
The next time Eagles fans will see him on the field is when the playoffs start, which is the weekend of January 11. In the meantime, the Eagles will try and get the regular season with a 14-3 record when they play the Giants at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
Andrew Catalon, Tiki Barber, and Jason McCourty will have the call for CBS.
