Selecting any player in the 7th round of the NHL Draft makes them an immediate long shot to ever play at the highest level, but the Oilers may have found a diamond in the rough.
Oilers prospect William Nicholl is tearing up the OHL with the London Knights right now, in his first season since being drafted. Prospect expert Bruce Curlock is raving about Nicholl's real potential to be an NHL player.
The 18 year old Nicholl was buried in the bottom six on London last season, but with older players moving on, he's getting more opportunities this season and running with it. In 17 games this season, Nicholl has scored 19 points - only one less than all of last season. He's taking an explosive step this year, which is obviously great for the Oilers.
Curlock is closely watching Nicholl this season, and is impressed with all aspects of his game as well as the improvement he's already showing from last year. His skating, offensive senses, competitiveness, and ability to score make him a very exciting prospect. Snagging him with the 7th round draft pick makes it even sweeter.
Nicholl is also playing on a line with Oilers prospect Sam O'Reilly this season, which will only be a positive to get him more acclimated with the organization. Maybe the two can develop some chemistry together and bring it if they come together up the Edmonton Oilers.
For now, Nicholl will be a great prospect to track over the next few years. If you're a diehard Oilers fan, it may even be worth it to check in and watch a few games.
