The Miami Dolphins have moved their two biggest trade pieces in one fell swoop. After dealing Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith yesterday, the Dolphins brought Darren Waller out of retirement to fill the hole at tight end. However, the outlook on the cornerback position remains unchanged, and that is not good.
With the dust finally settling on Monday’s news, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN answers the question: Is Miami done making moves ahead of the season?
“No, not with the remaining holes on its roster,” Louis-Jacques writes. “The Dolphins’ situation at cornerback is no different than it was two weeks ago — they still need two starters on either side of the field. Grier has suggested the availability of multiple veteran free agents, and that’s an increasingly likely route prior to the start of training camp. Their current cornerbacks room has plenty of youth and potential, but little starting experience.”
We would be foolish to assume the Phins will roll this cornerback unit into the 2025 season, however, local writer Barry Jackson is very high on one particular Miami corner heading into his fourth season.
Kader Kohou Miami’s ‘Most Improved’
Jackson of the Miami Herald wrote a glowing review for the 26-year-old corner entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract. In an article posted Tuesday afternoon, Jackson attempts to quiet the panic of Dolphins doubters by chronicling Kader Kohou’s efforts.
“The Dolphins have such confidence in Kohou, and a couple of their other young cornerbacks, that they haven’t shown much urgency in replacing Kendall Fuller, who was cut, or Jalen Ramsey,” Jackson writes. “They’ve offered contracts to at least one veteran cornerback (Rasul Douglas) and are expected to add a veteran starter or two before training camp.”
Turns out Kohou is ready to accept his new role as a veteran in Miami’s locker room.
“I have to step up and be leader in the room and show the younger guys how we want our unit to be, just like they did with me,” he told Jackson. “Jalen Ramsey, X [Xavien Howard], Jordan Poyer showed me the way. You don’t always have to talk; you can lead by example.”
“It’s going to be a challenge. Being the oldest guy in the room, whether you want it or not, is a little weight on your shoulder because you have to show the other guys. It’s not something I’m not prepared for.”
Top Veteran Cornerbacks Available
Rasul Douglas needs to be option one for the Miami Dolphins. He is looking for a place to call home for his tenth NFL season, and Pro Football Focus thinks South Beach is the perfect fit.
“Rasul Douglas may be a name to target in Miami’s Cover 2-heavy scheme (19.7%, third in NFL), a coverage he excelled in last season, having earned a 74.4 PFF coverage grade,” PFF writes.
Other big name corners still available range from lofty price tags to cheap acquisitions.
In the expensive category, I’d place free agents Stephon Gilmore, James Bradberry, and Mike Hilton. Any one of these four (Douglas included) is sure to jump start this unit. Zero risk, high reward signings.
he next category consists of mostly young corners who are looking for a second contract or veterans with an asking price lower than the others. This tier includes Shaquill Griffin, Asante Samuel Jr., Cameron Sutton, Eli Apple, and Caleb Farley.
If I had my pick of the bunch, I’d throw some serious cash at Douglas and see what I can get out of Caleb Farley who was a highly touted college product.
