The Philadelphia Eagles could potentially add a big-time playmaker to their offense, and we believe they should be closely monitoring a touchy situation unfolding in Miami.
Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith was absent from mandatory minicamp as he seeks a reworked contract.
Smith is in the eyes of many due for a pay raise after a career-best season, posting 88 catches for 884 yards and eight touchdowns in 2024. He is entering the final year of his two-year, $8.4 million deal which he signed with the Dolphins last offseason.
Eagles GM Howie Roseman obviously knows how to swing a trade and if he is willing to pay Smith what he’s seeking, we can imagine him already running through swap scenarios with Miami Dolphins GM Chris Grier.
Current Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert was himself the subject of trade talk (and even a possible release) before the NFL Draft, but he agreed to a restructured contract. Still, the team might not see him being in their future plans.
Adding Smith to the roster would give the Eagles a durable veteran tight end that could make an immediate impact.
However, there’s one major hurdle: Dolphins franchise quarterback Tua Tagovailoa wants Smith - who was recently the subject of discussions between Miami and the Pittsburgh Steelers - to stay in Florida.
"Oh 100 percent, that’s my guy. That’s my dog. Jonnu has done really good for us. I have nothing bad to say about him. I love him as a person, too, outside of football. I think all of our guys that do what they need to do, they should get paid," Tagovailoa said Tuesday from the Dolphins mandatory minicamp in Miami Gardens.
While it may be wishful thinking to picture Smith in an Eagles uniform, there’s no denying he would make the defending Super Bowl champions even better on offense. ... reason enough for Philly to give this a look.
