Deebo Samuel Strong Reaction To Joining Commanders In 49ers Trade

A year ago the Washington Commanders flirted with acquiring San Francisco 49ers' receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Now they've traded with another one, and one that apparently wanted to be with them all along.

Washington general manager Adam Peters pulled off the biggest trade of the NFL's young offseason last weekend by acquiring Deebo Samuel from the Niners in exchange for only a fifth-round draft pick. Now Samuel, who the Commanders dream of pairing with receiver Terry McLaurin and quarterback Jayden Daniels in Kliff Kingsbury's offense, says he's thrilled about his change of scenery.

"I think this is one of the best possible fits for me, where I can go in and help a team," Samuel wrote in a story for The Players' Tribune. "Honestly, when my agent asked me where I wanted to go, this was one of the teams at the top of my list. I started watching Jayden because of Aiyuk, that’s like his best friend.

"We used to chill, watch LSU games, and I knew he was going to be a stud. I’ve got some connections already with the coaching staff. Definitely ready to work with Terry for sure, because we came in the league at the same time. I’ve heard how hard he grinds."

Under Daniels and new head coach Dan Quinn the Commanders were the surprise of the 2024 NFL season, improving from 4-13 to 12-5 and winning two road playoff games on their way to the NFC Championship Game. With another proven, versatile weapon for Daniels, Washington's hopes are high even as free agency is only beginning.

"I’m just ready to match the energy and get to it," Samuel said. "I got a feeling this season is about to be one of them ones."
