With the New York Giants trading up in the 2025 NFL Draft to select quarterback Jaxson Dart from the Ole Miss Rebels, it appears as if the Giants are committed to him for the long haul. Dart was the second quarterback taken off the board in the 2025 NFL Draft.

For now, Dart is the third strong quarterback on the Giants depth chart behind Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson. Tommy DeVito will most likely be the odd man out for New York. Some NFL analysts think that the Giants need to start Dart sooner rather than later, but New York doesn’t want to rush his development.

New York Giants quarterbacks Russell Wilson (3), Jaxson Dart (6) and Tommy DeVito (15) perform drills together during Mandatory Minicamp at Quest Diagnostics Giants Training Center in East Rutherford on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

There is a reason why the Giants traded up from the 34th overall pick in the second round to the 25th overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft with the Houston Texans. Head Coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are loving what they are seeing from Dart so far during OTAs and mandatory minicamp.

ESPN.com Giants reporter Jordan Raanan said about Dart so far during the offseason,

“Dart had an “excellent” spring, according to Brian Daboll. The coach was especially impressed with the way Dart processed and retained information, confirming why he was a first-round pick. On his final throw of minicamp, he fired a dart deep down the right sideline for a 25-yard touchdown. It was indicative of the flashes he showed this spring. But there were also indications that he’s a rookie quarterback with plenty to learn, with him holding on to the ball too long at times. Dart began the spring taking reps with the third-team offense. Two weeks in, he was working primarily with the second team, behind Russell Wilson but ahead of Jameis Winston. “

Dart is with the second team more often because the Giants already know what Winston can do as the backup quarterback. For now, Winston will still be the backup in camp despite it, but is there a chance that Dart could be the backup instead of Winston? The odds are probably not because the Giants probably don’t want to rush his development.

There is no question that a lot of Giants fans are going to pay close attention to Dart during training camp and also during preseason games as well. He will most likely be the third quarterback when New York has to go on the road in Week 1 against the Washington Commanders.

If the Giants get off to a slow start again with Wilson, there is no doubt that Daboll may have to make a quarterback change to Dart. New York fans want to see better results in 2025 after finishing with a 3-14 record during the 2024 NFL season. It is not a surprise that Daboll loves Dart, and it is one of the reasons why they drafted him.
