Darren Waller Reveals When He Started Considering Retirement

New York was ravaged by injuries, especially offensively as the offensive line took hit after hit while Daniel Jones was lost for the second half of the year after tearing his ACL.

With so many rotating pieces, there was no hope for the Giants to climb back into the playoff race and thus went into the offseason with several questions regarding the roster.

Darren Waller was considered a big get for New York but he, too, struggled to stay on the field.

With so many injuries under his belt, Waller ultimately decided to retire from the NFL.

In an appearance on the The Rush Podcast, Waller explained he first started considering retiring in the middle of a game against the Buffalo Bills where he was asked to block on a play.

“We’re having a lot of success with this Y counter lead play, so I’m damn near playing fullback,” Waller said.

Waller noted that he didn’t want to act as a lead blocker on the field, but instead wanted to be a receiver.

It’s understandable that Waller felt that way considering he was once one of the best receiving tight ends in the NFL at his peak.

It must have been hard for someone like Waller to be asked to do something completely different on the field, but it sounds like he’s found peace in retirement and is transitioning to the next part of his life.
