The Dallas Cowboys special teams coordinator job on Brian Schottenheimer's staff appears to be set in stone: Nick Sorensen is expected to be hired for the position, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Sorensen is familiar with Schottenheimer as both worked together in Jacksonville in 2021 and Seattle before that. Sorensen will take John Fassel's spot, who departed to the Tennessee Titans despite the Cowboys' front office hoping to keep him.
Sorensen is a unique hire in that he was fired earlier in the month by the San Francisco 49ers. However, Sorensen was defensive coordinator in the Bay after ascending from defensive assistant in 2022. Going from one unit to another isn't a first for the 46-year old coach who played 10 seasons in the NFL. His path has seen him jump from defense to special teams multiple times:
- 2013-2015: Assistant special teams coach, Seahawks
- 2016: Assistant defensive backs coach, Seahawks
- 2017-2020: Secondary coach, Seahawks
- 2021: Special teams coordinator, Jaguars
- 2022: Defensive assistant, 49ers
- 2023: Defensive pass game specialist and nickels coach, 49ers
- 2024: Defensive coordinator, 49ers
- 2025: Special teams coordinator, Cowboys
The fact that Sorensen hasn't worked on special teams since 2021 isn't necessarily a bad thing, specially since he has the experience on that front both as a player and a coach.
A former safety, Sorensen didn't take long to jump into the world of coaching after his playing days. He last played in 2010 before taking up coaching in 2013. The Cowboys likely hope he'll apply his knowledge from his playing days to his coaching as he was a captain on special teams on each of his four years with the Jaguars.
The Cowboys also interviewed assistant special teams coaches Carlos Polk and Chris Banjo for the role.
