During the Washington Commanders' eventual loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game, a crazy moment happened in the fourth quarter. With nearly the entire fourth quarter to go and Philly up by 11 points, the Commanders needed a stop when the Eagles got into a Goal-To-Go situation.
The Eagles had the ball on the Washington one-yard line and that's when the chaos started. An offsides penalty on the Commanders and then a no-gain play occurred, making it the third attempt for the Eagles to punch the ball into the end zone.
Frankie Luvu was then flagged twice for encroachment after jumping over the offensive line and trying to make a stop. By the third attempt, the officials had seen enough and made one of the strangest calls NFL fans had ever heard.
"Washington has been advised that at some point the referee can award a score if this type of behavior happens again."
It was very much a "What the heck?" kind of moment and it turns out, it wasn't just us at home that were stunned by what the official said. Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels was just as floored as the rest of us while watching this play out on the sideline.
"You can give them a touchdown?" Daniels asked backup quarterback Marcus Mariota.
"I guess if they do it again," Mariota responded.
Jayden Daniels had the same reaction to crazy moment from NFC Championship Game
Daniels having the same reaction as everyone at home was pretty amusing though even if the Eagles did score moments later. The hope is that if Daniels is ever a part of something like this again that it's the other team that keeps committing penalties.
The Commanders backed off after that and the Eagles scored to essentially ice the game early in the fourth quarter. While the Commanders ended up losing the game by 55-23, Washington still hung around for most of the game.
Once the Eagles scored on this play, however, the writing was on the wall. It was an 18-point deficit with 12 and a half minutes to go and the Commanders then turned the ball over on downs the next possession. That's when things really spiraled out of control with the Eagles scoring touchdowns on their next two drives.
