Chiefs Cut Ties With Injured RB, WR as Offseason Work Continues

Despite a third consecutive trip to the Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs struggled to find consistently high-level/explosive production out of their skill position players on offense last year, which has led to an offseason focus on installing more weapons around superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes. 

However, Kansas City did some personnel housekeeping on Thursday, May 15, wherein the team actually parted ways with two potential playmakers -- a running back and wide receiver -- as preseason work continues, and the team whittles down its roster toward an initial 53-man grouping. 

"[Chiefs] waived injured [running back] Keaontay Ingram and removed [wide receiver] Justin Lockhart from injured reserve with an injury settlement," Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 in Houston reported via X. 

Ingram, 25, spent last season with the Chiefs -- his third campaign in the league after two years with the Arizona Cardinals. 

The former product of Texas and USC was a sixth-round pick of the Cardinals in the 2022 NFL draft (No. 201 overall). Ingram appeared in 20 games over his tenure in Arizona, though he played in just one contest for Kansas City in 2024. 

The Chiefs signed Lockhart as an undrafted free agent earlier this month. The rookie wideout played five collegiate seasons between 2019-2024, three at Nevada and his last two with San Jose State. He missed the entire 2023 campaign due to injury. 

Lockhart tallied 53 receptions for 983 receiving yards and five touchdowns upon his return to action last year. His draw to the Chiefs came in the form of his potential explosiveness after averaging 18.5 yards per reception in 2024.
