The Chicago Bears were able to address almost every position of need in the offseason. Most agree that the only one that didn’t get as much attention as expected was running back. However, many still don’t think they did enough at edge rusher. Their only notable addition was Dayo Odeyingbo. While the veteran defensive end was productive during his time in Indianapolis, he was never a true sack specialist. Some feel the Bears need to take another swing in order to give this defense the best chance to thrive.

Talk recently has hovered around Trey Hendrickson, the sack leader from last season. He is embroiled in a contract standoff with the Cincinnati Bengals. Both sides are dug in with no end in sight. However, he isn’t the only one. Shemar Stewart, their 1st round pick from two months ago, is also holding out over a disagreement with offset guarantees in his contract. It’s gotten bad enough that some wonder if Stewart might just sit out the season and re-enter the 2026 draft.
If Cincinnati can’t get anything done, they may have no choice but to trade him elsewhere. Bleacher Report thinks Chicago is the team to watch above all others.
The Chicago Bears would be taking a major gamble on Stewart.
There is no question that the Texas A&M defensive end is talented. He’s a freak of nature at 6’5, 270 lbs, and 4.59 speed. He drew comparisons to Roy Robertson-Harris, among others. There was one major concern. For all his obvious ability, he only managed 4.5 sacks in three years of college. Many wonder if he has the natural instincts for rushing the passer. There is no question his physical profile is a perfect fit for what Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen prefers. He’s worked with his type many times in the past. Would the team give up both of their day two picks in 2026 to make such a trade happen? That seems unlikely. GM Ryan Poles isn’t prone to trading picks for unproven players. The price would either have to come down, or Allen would have to basically put his reputation on the line by pushing for it. Neither seems likely.
