Celtics Call Draft Pick ‘Best Passing Big Man’ in College Basketball

The Boston Celtics didn’t just trade down in the 2025 NBA Draft—they may have traded smart.

With the 46th overall pick, Boston selected British center Amari Williams from Kentucky. He’s not a household name. Yet. But the 23-year-old arrives with something rare: a 7-foot-6 wingspan and a reputation as the best passing big in college basketball.

That’s not an exaggeration. According to Mike Zarren, the Celtics’ assistant GM, Williams has “been one of the best passing big men in college for a long time.”

From Drexel to Draft Night

Williams spent four years at Drexel before transferring to Kentucky, where he averaged 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists on 56% shooting. He wasn’t flashy—but his game has nuance.

He reads the floor with ease, sets purposeful screens, and delivers passes with the touch of a guard.

And defensively? He has the wingspan to make life hell in the paint.

Only two other active British-born players are in the NBA—OG Anunoby and Jeremy Sochan. Williams is next in line.

Celtics Depth Chart Opportunity

The Celtics will reportedly sign Williams to a two-way deal, per Jay King of The Athletic. But don’t be surprised if he plays real NBA minutes sooner than later.

Boston’s frontcourt is suddenly thin. Kristaps Porzingis is gone. Al Horford and Luke Kornet are free agents. Xavier Tillman Sr. fell out of the rotation. Neemias Queta is the only true center under contract.

The path is there. Williams just has to take it.

Summer League Debut Incoming

Celtics fans can catch their first look at the 46th pick during NBA Summer League starting July 11. Williams is already embracing the moment, tweeting “Beyond blessed” after being selected.

It’s not the flashiest pick. But it’s a Celtics kind of pick—quiet, smart, and system-first.

If Williams can defend and move the ball the way Boston believes he can, the Celtics may have quietly added a future rotation piece with just a second-round pick.
