New Trade Pitch Sends Giants’ Jameis Winston to ‘Pass Happy’ Offense

New York Giants' quarterback Jameis Winston may be one of the most coveted players on the trade market this summer.

New York Giants backup quarterback Jameis Winston may already be expendable.

If first-round rookie Jaxson Dart makes a strong push to steal the starting job from Russell Wilson, or at minimum continues to show the coaching staff this summer that he’s capable of stepping in and playing at a moment’s notice if called upon, Winston’s role as a veteran backup might be redundant which makes him an ideal trade chip.

Given that general manager Joe Schoen, head coach Brian Daboll, and the Giants still have some significant holes to fill on the roster, shipping Winston off in exchange for draft capital or a player capable of providing depth on the 2025 roster could be a worthwhile move.

Giants’ Jameis Winston Linked to Tennessee Titans

Jameis Winston trade rumors between Giants and Saints.

GettyNew York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston has been the subject of trade rumors ever since the spring.

Over at Bleacher Report, NFL analyst Kristopher Knox suggests the Tennessee Titans could be an ideal trade partner for the Giants, and Winston could play a valuable role as a scheme fit behind No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward.

“The Titans,” Knox writes for B/R. “Are largely expected to open the season with Ward as their starter. They have some experience in the form of Tim Boyle and Brandon Allen, but they recently lost Levis to a season-ending shoulder injury.

“Winston could be a helpful mentor to Ward while giving the Titans a high-end backup option. His arm talent would fit with Brian Callahan’s pass-heavy offense.”

Adding a player with Winston’s experience, who has passed for 24,225 yards with 111 touchdowns to 89 interceptions in his career could be a significant upgrade from a leadership standpoint when it comes to Ward’s development, while also adding a competent passer if disaster strikes for the Titans.

It remains to be seen whether the Titans will make a move to add a quarterback to replace Levis, or upgrade their current room behind Ward, but Winston would be an interesting name to watch.

Darius Slayton Reveals How Russell Wilson Has Helped Most

The Giants are hoping that Wilson’s arrival will usher in a new era, where the vertical passing game lights up the scoreboard.

New York, after all, averaged just 16.1 points per game last season, with only the Cleveland Browns scoring fewer points.

As the intensity is about to ratchet up during training camp, and after a spring’s worth of OTA and minicamp practices already in the books, veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton says he’s already seeing Wilson make a major impact.

“Probably just some clarity,” Slayton told reporters, is what Wilson is already adding for the Giants’ offense. “He’s been playing football for a long time, so he knows what’s worked for him and his career. He knows what he likes, what he doesn’t like and that makes it really simple on all of us just be able to get on the same page as him.”

This spring, Wilson implored head coach Brian Daboll to run more seven-on-seven periods during practice to work on his timing with receivers, the veteran organized a passing camp away from the facility with some of the Giants’ top pass catchers, and seems to already be changing the culture of the offense.

“It’s been nice having him around,” Slayton says. “Been a good first two days for us. Obviously, camp is a little bit different than OTA’s – a little bit higher intensity, a little more team periods, things like that where you get to play a little bit closer and closer to real football. It’s been a good two days and I think Russ has operated well.”
