Canucks’ Quinn Hughes is Conor Garland’s newborn son’s godfather

Conor Garland’s newborn son appears to keep making headlines.

Despite the fact that Garland’s son Quintin is named after a Jaws character and not Vancouver Canucks defenceman Quinn Hughes, the defenceman is apparently the godfather of the child, according to Sportsnet reporter Iain MacIntyre.

Garland and his wife, Meghan, had welcomed his son into the world earlier this week. He had been questionable to play in Tuesday’s game against the New York Rangers due to how close his wife was to giving birth, but he managed to get into the lineup and score en route to their 4-3 loss before being rushed to the hospital later that night.

His new son had drawn some attention due to his name, Quintin, with some initially believing that he was named after Hughes. However, it turned out that the name was actually inspired by Garland’s love of sharks and the movie Jaws, as Quint is the name of a professional shark hunter and one of the main characters in the film.

However, Hughes does have some involvement with the newborn, as Garland made the Canucks’ captain Quintin’s godfather. No, this isn’t another movie reference; Hughes is actually the godfather of the child. The details of Hughes’ responsibilities as the godfather were not made public, but they can typically range from acting as a role model for the kid and supporting the family to potentially being a legal guardian in the event their parents are unfit to care for the child.

We’ll find out on Saturday if Garland gains any “dad strength” and if there’s such a thing as “godfather strength” for Hughes, as the Canucks will look to snap back-to-back losses when they take on the Ottawa Senators at 4 p.m. PST. Vancouver currently sits fifth in the Pacific Division with a 9-6-3 record, one point behind the Colorado Avalanche and the Edmonton Oilers for the two wild card positions in the Western Conference.
