The Vancouver Canucks have placed defencemen Jett Woo and Guillaume Brisebois on waivers for the purpose of assignment to AHL Abbotsford. General manager Patrik Allvin made the announcement late Thursday morning:
Brisebois, 27, played in just eight AHL games last season after suffering a complicated head injury he sustained during a preseason game against the Seattle Kraken following a hit to the head from Brandon Tanev. It’s been a long road to recovery to this point, and Brisebois will look to emerge as one of the key cogs in what should be a crowded Abbotsford blue line this season. Brisebois will be competing with the likes of Christian Wolanin, Akito Hirose, and Elias Pettersson for playing time this season.
Drafted in the third round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Brisebois is the longest-tenured player in the Canucks organization behind only Brock Boeser. Through 27 career NHL games, Brisebois has a goal and two assists to his name.
Also joining Brisebois in Abbotsford — if both players go unclaimed, of course — is Jett Woo, who the Canucks signed to a one-year deal this past offseason. A 24-year-old right shot defenceman, the Canucks selected Woo with the 37th overall pick in the 2018 Draft. Last season marked Woo’s fourth in the AHL, and was his best year to date as he tallied seven goals and 24 assists through 62 games. Despite a call-up last season, Woo has yet to make his NHL debut.
We will find out at 11 AM Pacific tomorrow if the players successfully clear waivers, which seems like a safe bet given both players’ age and inability to stick at the NHL level to this point in their careers.
The Canucks made their first round of roster cuts on the final day of training camp this past weekend, and are expected to make more in the coming days after two preseason games.
