The Vancouver Canucks are closing in on a contract extension with goaltender Thatcher Demko, according to a report from Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli.
TSN’s Darren Dreger added that while the Canucks and Demko have agreed on term, there is “still some work being done” on money and structure. Dreger reported last week that progress had been made on a Demko extension.
Demko becomes extension eligible on Tuesday, July 1st, and with reports of Conor Garland signing a 6 year extension at $6 million annually coming down last week, it’s very possible the Canucks announce two contract extensions tomorrow.
Both Demko and Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford made it clear at their end of season press conferences that they hoped an extension could get done. Rutherford talked about the risk involved given Demko’s struggle to stay healthy — especially this past season, when multiple injuries limited him to just 23 games played — but still said the club wanted to sign Demko to an extension.
Demko, who turns 30 in December, was the runner-up for the Vezina Trophy in 2023-24 after picking up a career-high 35 wins and a career-best .918 save percentage through 51 games.
A few weeks ago, we attempted to break down what the sweet spot might be for an extension between the Canucks and Demko, and you can read that by clicking below!
