Browns Could Get Bad News on Veteran Free Agent Quarterback Target

There's a ton of speculation about what the Cleveland Browns will do to replace the oft-injured Deshaun Watson under center next season.

Browns Could Get Bad News on Veteran Free Agent Quarterback Target

After a second Achilles tear in three months in January, the Browns are once again looking for a quarterback to carry the team.

With the No. 2 overall draft pick in next month's NFL Draft, some think the Browns will take one of the top two names under center - Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward - with that pick.

But another speculation involves Cleveland going with a veteran in the room to either groom a younger quarterback or just to take over. And one name along those lines is Kirk Cousins of the Falcons.

But while most assume Cousins will be cut by Atlanta after losing his starting job last season to rookie Michael Penix Jr., ESPN's Jeremy Fowler isn't so sure.

Fowler appeared on 92.3 The Fan's Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima to share his thoughts.

"A lot of people around the league have linked the Browns to Kirk Cousins," said Fowler. "I feel like that certainly could happen, but what was surprising to me, coming out of last week, is how many people think Atlanta will hold onto Cousins. Just either out of pride, or cause ownership wants to and doesn't wanna just pay $90 million for one season and you hold onto him and maybe someone has in injury mid-season or early in the year, or camp where you can get more of a draft pick in a trade for him where people are desperate.

"But it seems to be their strategy is – exactly what GM Terry Fontenot said publicly – that he doesn't plan on moving him, or cutting him, or trading him. Which is shocking to a lot of people, but there's a sentiment right now that he's not bluffing."
