Broncos plan to sign offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton to practice squad

The Denver Broncos plan to sign offensive lineman offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton to their practice squad once he clears waivers today. His experience playing under Sean Payton with the New Orleans Saints is likely a very good reason to have him around this season.

The injury to Quinn Bailey also leaves a big problem with Denver’s offensive line depth. The team has been extraordinarily healthy since they moved on from Loren Landow, but injuries can and do still happen — just not at the same frequency they had under his watch.

As for Throckmorton, our own Ross Allen reviewed his fit with the 2024 Broncos earlier this year and had this to say:

He also has 32 snaps as a sixth offensive lineman in Sean Payton’s offense, and with Quinn Bailey’s unfortunate injury, that might put Throckmorton in the running to take that spot back, but now with Denver instead of the Saints.

He’s fairly athletic for a guard, and he did play tackle for most of his collegiate career, but he was bumped inside due to concerns that he’d be able to keep up with NFL EDGE rushers. He made a clean transition though and looks good on the interior offensive line.

Throckmorton is a smart player that can decently handle a bull rush or other types of strength moves from defensive linemen. You can expect him to mostly hold his own up front.

With almost 2,000 total snaps over his 49 starts, that first line is likely why he is on the practice squad and not the initial 53-man roster. Bailey was that sixth offensive lineman, so that means there will be a lot of emphasis on that role with the remaining depth along Denver’s offensive line.

If Thockmorton is coming along, then he could see his playing time on the active roster increase rapidly. As a seasoned veteran, he should have a leg up on the remaining competition on the roster in that regard.
