The NFL has chosen its players of the month for the month of November 2024 and the Denver Broncos have one of them. Cornerback Patrick Surtain II has been named the NFL Defensive Player of the Month.
This is great recognition for a player who is putting together a terrific season. He is doing that rather quietly, but for a cornerback, that's how it's supposed to be. Few teams have chosen to attack Surtain often and as a result, the wide receivers he has covered have had little impact in games.
On Monday night against the Cleveland Browns when Jerry Jeudy had a massive night, gaining 235 yards through the air, the vast majority of that came when covered by someone other than Surtain, usually Levi Wallace. Surtain allowed Jeudy to catch just two passes for 20 yards.
For the month of November, Surtain was targeted by an opponent 17 times on 140 defensive snaps. He allowed nine catches for 55 yards and no touchdowns.
Pat Surtain is first Broncos DB win Defensive Player of the Month in 18 years
The last time a Broncos defensive back won this award came back in 2006 and it was Champ Bailey, who is now in the Hall of Fame. Surtain is often compared to Bailey in terms of his ability to lock down one side of the field completely.
Surtain is arguably the best cover corner in the league today and he should be well on his way to a third consecutive Pro Bowl selection.
