The cornerback position is an area the Green Bay Packers will need to pay a lot of attention to as they head into the new season. Jaire Alexander was hampered by injuries last term, but he is expected to bounce back in 2024 as Green Bay’s primary option at CB.
The Packers need some insurance, though. Eric Stokes, the man poised to start alongside Alexander this coming season has also been bogged down by injuries over the past couple of seasons. As such, it wouldn’t be a terrible idea for Green Bay to add some depth to this position.
Green Bay Packers Urged to Consider Signing Stephon Gilmore
Aaron Schatz of ESPN recently conjured up a list of each team’s final move before training camp begins. In his opinion, Green Bay should consider signing veteran CB Stephon Gilmore via free agency:
“Eric Stokes is penciled in to start opposite Jaire Alexander, but Stokes has played only 12 games in the past two seasons due to different injuries, including ankle and hamstring problems. The Packers need a backup for Stokes with more experience than Corey Ballentine or Carrington Valentine. Gilmore, 33, still has something left in the tank and would be valuable to the Packers even if he couldn’t beat out Stokes for the starting spot in training camp,” Schatz wrote.
There’s no denying that Gilmore, a five-time Pro Bowler and a two-time All-Pro cornerback, is no longer the superstar he once was. It is also true, however, that the former Defensive Player of the Year still has a few years of quality football in him.
As Schatz argues, Gilmore would be a great addition to the Packers this offseason, as the 33-year-old should be able to carve out a role for himself on the squad regardless of the situation.
