The Green Bay Packers’ defense has continuously underperformed despite abundant defensive talent. From habitual defense-heavy drafts to offseason free-agent acquisitions, the Packers have kept top-level talent on defense. However, the defense fails to enter top-tier talks year after year.

One of the Green Bay Packers first-round selections came out of Georgia in 2021, after a promising rookie season and numerous injuries, Eric Stokes looks to get back on track in 2024.

Eric Stokes, selected in the first round of the 2021 draft from Georgia, shined as a rookie but experienced a decline in the first half of his second season. His Sophomore year was cut short by a foot injury in Week 9. In 2023, Stokes saw limited action due to recurring injuries that led to extended periods off the field each time. Now in training camp, it seems Stokes is ready to pick up from his hot start.

“Stokes has got great energy all around the building. We all love him,” defensive tackle Kenny Clark said. “Every day he’s bringing in the right energy. Even when he was hurt, you really couldn’t tell. He’s never one of those guys that’s down. High character, good overall dude and somebody that you root for. … And he got a pick today, two picks. It’s good to see him getting back to himself.”

Eric Stokes’s abilities are truly unique. Touting a 4.3 40 speed in the NFL combine and a 9.31 RAS score, Stokes has the athleticism to stay connected to nearly any receiver on earth. But it appears that the former Bulldog is more invested in the team defense under Jeff Hafley, as opposed to his individual performance.

If Eric Stokes manages to earn back his CB2 spot from Carrington Valentine, then it will be apparent that the Green Bay Packers defensive back depth is secured for potentially years to come. Though entering his contract year, Stokes has to prove his health to the team more than anything to secure his second contract.
