The Green Bay Packers remain in a wait-and-see phase regarding veteran cornerback Jaire Alexander. With OTAs approaching, Alexander still seems hesitant about finalizing a new deal, even though both sides are reportedly hopeful that an agreement will eventually be reached.
Talks began with the goal of finding a deal that benefits both parties, but as the end of May nears, no resolution has been made.
“On the contract front, the Packers could want a revised deal that allows Alexander -- who has missed at least 10 games in three of the last four seasons -- to earn his full salary if he's healthy and available in 2025 but protects the team in case the injuries continue,” Zach Kruse wrote.
Despite the lack of a finalized contract, both sides remain in daily communication — a promising sign.
“Alexander has not reported to the Packers’ voluntary workouts, which would raise red flags over his status with the team. While speculation has run wild, passing game coordinator Derrick Ansley sang a different tune, telling ESPN’s Rob Demovsky that he’s been in contact with Alexander every day while skipping the offseason workouts,” Chris Schad wrote.
Even head coach Matt LaFleur has expressed his desire to see Alexander return in a Packers uniform.
“That’s just something we are working through and hopefully we’ll have some resolution sooner than later," LaFleur said.
Although there haven’t been any major updates — aside from a few subtle developments — this could signal that the Packers aren’t planning to let Alexander walk without a fight if a deal doesn’t come together.
“A lack of updates could stem from the Packers potentially having second thoughts on sending Alexander to free agency with a buyout,” Chris Schad wrote.
All signs point to Alexander remaining in Green Bay this season, regardless of whether a new deal is reached. The team doesn’t appear ready to let him go freely — unless a trade offer comes their way.
