Bears Urged to Pursue 1,585-Yard Dual-Threat: ‘Should Be Doable’

Over his first three seasons in the NFL, Breece Hall has established himself as one of the league’s best dual-threat running backs.

Since getting drafted by the New York Jets in 2022, he’s been the kind of player who can change the momentum of a game with a single touch, whether that’s breaking off a long run or taking a screen pass to the house.

For a team like the Chicago Bears, who are looking to build the best possible offense around quarterback Caleb Williams, Hall’s name could be at the top of the wish list. Chicago’s RBs room could also use a boost.

Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine thinks Hall would be the perfect player for the Bears to pursue next offseason.

“The Bears are heading toward a tight cap situation in 2026,” Ballentine wrote on August 11. “However, clearing enough cap space to pay for a running back should be doable and Breece Hall figures to be one of the most intriguing names who could be available.”

A Look at Hall’s NFL Career So Far

The Jets took Hall in the second round of the 2022 draft after a stellar career at Iowa State. It didn’t take long for him to flash star potential. In just seven games as a rookie, Hall racked up 463 yards, averaging 5.8 yards per carry, before a torn ACL derailed his season.

His second season in 2023 was especially impressive. Playing behind a shaky offensive line, Hall finished with 994 rushing yards, 591 receiving yards (that’s 1,585 yards from scrimmage) and eight total touchdowns, including a career-high 83-yard scamper.

In 2024, Hall proved he could handle full-season workhorse duties. Starting 16 games, he had 876 rushing yards, 57 catches and 1,359 yards from scrimmage.

Hall finished his first three NFL seasons with 2,333 rushing yards, 1,292 receiving yards, and 22 total touchdowns in 40 games, putting him squarely in the conversation as one of the league’s premier dual-threat backs. The fact that he’s done all of this by age 24 only adds to his appeal.

“He has struggled to live up to the expectations of being an early second-rounder,” Ballentine added. “We’re waiting on his first 1,000-yard rushing season. But the Jets haven’t been a picture of offensive stability or even blocking during his time in New York. A fresh start in a Ben Johnson offense could be appealing for both parties.”

Should the Chicago Bears Pursue Breece Hall in 2026?

Jets RB Breece Hall

Looking ahead to 2026, the Bears could make a compelling case for signing Hall if the Jets don’t lock him up. His rookie deal ends after the 2025 season, and Chicago’s competitive window with Williams under center will still be wide open.

Ben Johnson’s offense would be a perfect fit for Hall’s skill set. Hall’s ability to threaten the perimeter, break tackles inside and turn checkdowns into chunk plays would mesh seamlessly with what Johnson likes to do.

Johnson’s history in Detroit proves just how dangerous a versatile back can be in his scheme. With the Lions, he crafted an offense that led the NFL in scoring in 2024, leaning on a two-back system featuring David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs.

The timing also might be just right. Hall is set to hit free agency at just 25 years old—rare for a back with his experience and production—which could make him a high-upside signing if Chicago structures the contract wisely.
