Another week, another reason why the Chicago Bears are as incompetent an organization as there is in the league. Losing to the New England Patriots 19-3, the Bears did everything they possibly could to get their head coach fired on Sunday.
Yet, despite the noise growing louder for Matt Eberflus to get the boot, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams let it be known that he has his coach's back.
"Are you confident in Matt right now? Why or why not?" Williams was asked in his postgame presser.
For a split second, Williams seemed like he was amused by the question and looked as though he'd give a somewhat snarky answer. It was either that, or he felt insulted by the question.
In any event, the rookie wasn't about to take that bait.
"Am I confident in my head coach? Yes, I am confident in my head coach." Williams responded.
Asking a question like that, the Bears media had to know what they were doing. Everyone and their brother is talking about a potential Eberflus firing, and they will be until it finally happens. But, Williams knows better. He's not about to burn that bridge.

He's also not going to throw his head coach under the bus for the simple reason that he's got to know the Bears' future head coaching opening is going to be attractive, so long as he's under center. He's not about to show any future coaching candidates a quarterback who will take shots at his head coach.
He didn't have a choice but to respond the way he did, quite frankly. And, Eberflus had to love hearing his quarterback say what he said. Even if it was Williams taking the high road and not necessarily the brutally honest route, Eberflus was likely tickled by those words.
"As players, we know how good we can be," Williams went on.
The young quarterback detailed how he's been in losing locker rooms before and insinuated he knew what it felt like when the locker room was lost. He seemed to hint that this Bears locker room wasn't lost, which was interesting.
Now, he didn't flat-out say those words. But, it sure felt like he was trying to be genuine with his support for Eberflus and for taking responsibility as players, rather than pinning it on his coaching staff.
That's all good and well, and Williams can be a little bit ignorant and/or a bit too kind and professional in respect to his coaching staff, but he has to know changes are coming.
If he does, indeed, believe the locker room has not been lost, then that's a little concerning when it's appeared there are some veterans on the team who would disagree. Whether it's wide receiver D.J. Moore playing somewhat coy just a few days ago or safety Kevin Byard being a bit more blunt after today's game, some players sure seem to be peeved, at the very least.
Regardless of how Williams feels or what he says on the matter of this current coaching staff, it couldn't be more obvious as to what needs to happen. Eberflus will not be around a whole lot longer. Ryan Poles can't afford to allow that to happen.
If he does, then Poles will be putting handcuffs on his prized no. 1 overall pick and current franchise quarterback.
