Around the NFL: 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey OUT in Week 2, possible IR stint incoming

The Seattle Seahawks are not the only team in the NFC West dealing with health concerns to their best running back. For the San Francisco 49ers and superstar Christian McCaffrey, the health news just keeps getting worse. Last week, McCaffrey was a surprise inactive at the last minute due to a calf injury and Achilles tendinitis.

During the week, it was reported McCaffrey was a “long shot” to start in Week 2. Unfortunately, that news did come to pass as accurate, as well as some further negative development. Apparently, McCaffrey’s Achilles tendinitis is so bad the team is considering a stint for him on the injured reserve (IR) list.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan described Thursday’s practice this week as the day where McCaffrey had his “worst day” with “the most pain” experienced.

It has been a brutal start to the 2024 campaign for McCaffrey after having quite the memorable offseason. Not only did the San Francisco star earn himself a two-year extension to keep him as the highest paid running back in the league, he also landed himself a spot on the cover of Madden 25.

Now, the tables have turned in a hurry. Should the 49ers place McCaffrey on injured reserve following this weekend, he will miss a minimum of four games. Those games would include a road trip in Los Angeles to play the Rams, a home game against the Patriots, then back on the road to play the Cardinals and….
