Alabama or Auburn? Who won most head-to-head games this year?

The Iron Bowls of … everything.

Now that the 2024-25 collegiate athletics season is almost over (track and field NCAA meet remains), we can take stock of the head-to-head competitions between our state’s two SEC schools.

It’s fair to say this was a spirited and well-contested year between Alabama and Auburn.

You saw arguably the most anticipated regular-season men’s basketball game when No. 1 Auburn beat No. 2 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Less than a month later, the Crimson Tide returned the favor at the buzzer in Auburn.

The football Iron Bowl was somewhat of a dud in terms of excitement after a legendary ending a year earlier in Jordan-Hare Stadium. A regular old 28-14 final gave Alabama a fifth straight win in that series.

But who owned the Iron Bowls of everything this year?

The final count in head-to-head, only Alabama vs. only Auburn competitions, was a nailbiter.

But in the end, there is a winner and a loser.

Auburn won 8.

Alabama won 7.

They tied once.

So, the unweighted state champ is Auburn.

No doubt, there’s an argument that a tennis dual meet doesn’t carry the same gravitas as the football feud.

But if we’re just talking raw numbers, the Tigers took the year.

Auburn took two of three baseball games played on their home field.

There was the men’s basketball split while the Tide took the only women’s basketball game.

Coleman Coliseum was the site of rivalry history beyond the men’s basketball showdown. Less than a week after the hoops showdown, Auburn scored its first road win over Alabama in Coleman Coliseum. A 197.750 to 197.350 final set off a wild celebration on the mat for the visitors.

Auburn swept both swimming and diving meets.

Alabama claimed the only softball meeting, a 3-2 final in the SEC tournament.

They split the volleyball matches with Alabama scoring an upset win over then-No. 25 Auburn.

The lone tie came on the soccer field, 1-1 as the No. 14 Tigers got the equalizer seven minutes after Alabama scored first.

We didn’t include meetings where Alabama and Auburn competed in the same invitationals, tournaments or SEC postseasons.

This list was purely rival versus rival.
