There are high expectations surrounding Jared McCain after he was selected 16th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2024 NBA Draft.
McCain was a standout at Duke and some are even considering him as one of the dark horses in the Rookie of the Year race, although, it is unclear how much game time he will get on a stacked 76ers roster.
McCain also appears to be feeling the pressure as he gears up to meet one of the NBA's best players and his new teammate, Joel Embiid.
While McCain has already had the opportunity to bond with Tyrese Maxey and Paul George, his introduction to the former league MVP has yet to happen, and he seems to be nervous about the meeting.
In a recent appearance on 'Podcast P with Paul George', McCain said: "Maxey-I worked out with this morning. I went golfing with him. I got to meet Maxey more, but I haven't had any interaction with Joel. I'm a little nervous for that one."
George, who signed a four-year, $212 million contract with the Sixers over the summer, was quick to reassure the rookie that he would get along with Embiid just fine.
McCain has already shown flashes of his potential during the NBA Summer League, though he struggled with his shooting. He shot 28.6% from the field and 25.5% from three-point range.
Despite the shooting woes, he contributed in other areas. His rebounding was a particular positive and he did not seem to lose his confidence even though his shot was not falling.
As McCain prepares for his first full season in the NBA, his meeting with Embiid is likely to be a significant moment for the rookie. It's just part and parcel of making it to the league though. Whether it's on the court or in the locker room, his growth and development will be something to watch this season.
