After joining the team in free agency, several players are embarking on a new chapter with the Miami Dolphins.
Among them, quarterback Zach Wilson stands out as the most recognizable name. The former No. 2 overall draft pick has signed a one-year contract and is expected to serve as Tua Tagovailoa’s backup.
This move marks Wilson’s third team in three seasons. Last year, he played as the backup quarterback for the Denver Broncos following a trade. Before that, he spent three seasons with the New York Jets, the team that drafted him second overall in 2021.
His tenure with the Jets was far from seamless. As a rookie, he faced early challenges that resulted in an unstable period where he was frequently rotated in and out of the starting lineup.
Wilson is turning the page in Year 5 of his NFL career, hoping to relaunch his career in Miami.
For Wilson, it all starts with his new head coach — Mike McDaniel.
“I think [he's] just extremely raw, his ability to just be completely himself every single day is I think what you want in a coach,” Wilson said via NBC Sports.
“Somebody that is going to give you exactly the same guy every single day and obviously he’s a phenomenal coach and shows how much he cares and invests in you, and so those are some of the qualities I’m just the most excited for.”.
Considering Tagovailoa's injury history, Wilson may see time on this field. This time, he will have star wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle at his disposal. Wilson might also have the chance to compete against the Jets as both are in the AFC East division.
