Why the New York Giants Cut Quarterback Daniel Jones & Where He Might Sign Next

The New York Giants did something very unusual this past week: they cut their starting quarterback, Daniel Jones, in the middle of the season.

For some backstory: Daniel was the starter for the Giants for several seasons, which were plagued with injuries, coaching changes, and poor play. On November 18, 2024, the Giants announced they were benching Daniel in favor of third string Tommy DeVito. This effectively meant that Daniel would never play for the Giants again. He finished his career 24-44-1.

However, most teams, after benching their starter, have kept them on the bench for the rest of the season in case of injury to the new quarterback. However, in a surprise move, on November 22, 2024, the Giants cut Jones. This now allows Daniel to sign with a different team.

You may be wondering why Daniel was cut from the team.

The team decided to release him from the roster after he made the request.

Giants President John Mara made the following statement on Friday (November 22): “Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him. We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.” By the way, a Hollywood fun fact: John Mara is Kate and Rooney Mara‘s uncle.

Now, where might Daniel end up signing? ESPN reports that the two most likely landing spots would be the Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings. They are both playoff contender teams, so Daniel would likely be acting as a backup.
