Why the Giants might rely on Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston more than you think

New York Giants fans certainly hope that Russell Wilson will lead the team to more victories than the three they enjoyed all of last seasons, and while there's no doubt the Giants' offense -- and team in general -- will be much improved in 2025, Wilson, and veteran backup Jameis Winston, have an even bigger responsibility than the end-of-year record.

The 2025 season is all about rookie Jaxson Dart's development, and the veterans in the QB room have to buy in, even though Dart represents their football mortality.

According to safety Jevon Holland, all is going according to plan between Wilson, Winston, and Dart.

“Russ and Jameis are just two individuals who have had different paths in the league, but have been in the league, been in different systems,” Holland said, via NJ.com. “You can just tell a different level of poise and routine day in and day out. You see them doing the same thing pre-practice and the same thing post-practice.

“It’s like it almost looks like it’s second nature for those two, and I’m super excited for Jaxson because he has two extremely good vets and two individuals that speak life into everybody around them,” Holland continued. “You have to raise the youth, and I know those two individuals are going to raise Jaxson into a great quarterback.”

The Giants selected Dart with the 25th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after New York traded back into Round 1 for their QB-next. He joins Abdul Carter, the No. 3 overall pick, as the Giants' tandem of first-rounders this year.

The New York Giants' 2025 season will be judged based mainly on how Dart performs once his number is called. He's expected to take over as the starter at some point this year, assuming the Giants don't have an unexpected winning season. If they do, it means Wilson is shining, and Dart will enjoy a true redshirt year.

However, with the NFL's most difficult schedule, it's unlikely New York will be in playoff contention once December rolls around. And when it does, we'll see just how good of a mentor Wilson and Winston are.
