Why Russell Wilson meeting with Browns may actually be a good thing for Giants

Russell Wilson, the Giants' Plan B free agent quarterback option behind Aaron Rodgers, isn’t rushing to sign anywhere.

ESPN reported Wednesday that the Super Bowl XLVIII winner is scheduled to visit with the Browns on Thursday, before traveling to East Rutherford to visit with the Giants on Friday.

This is a good thing for the Giants.

You read that right.

As desperate as general manager Joe Schoen is for a A) a new quarterback and B) a winning team in 2025, the main offseason goal was always to find the QB of the future.

Just ask co-owner John Mara.

“That’s obviously the No. 1 issue for us going into this offseason: Find our quarterback of the future,” Mara said in early January. “Whether that be via the draft or acquiring a veteran, it’s going to be up to (Schoen and coach Brian Daboll) to decide, ultimately.”

Wilson — who, at 36, is clearly not a long-term QB answer — getting wooed by Cleveland would bring the Giants one step closer to that goal. The “why” is simple: Wilson would likely eliminate the Browns, who hold the No. 2 pick, as a QB-needy team in April’s draft.

The Titans are likely to pick Cam Ward with the first pick. They bolstered their O-line in free agency and haven’t been linked to virtually any veteran QB. Giants fans should probably give up on the dream of trading up for Ward.

The Browns, meanwhile, are trying to field a competitive team in 2025 (that’s what they told Myles Garrett, at least) and likely wouldn’t waste the second pick on another QB — especially with Deshaun Watson’s albatross of a contract still on the books.

That would leave Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders to fall right in the Giants lap — no trade up required.

Is Sanders QB-of-the-future material? Maybe, maybe not. But he’d at least be a lottery ticket at the most important position in sports. And for the first time in a long time, Giants fans would have hope.
