The Bills are about to begin what hopefully turns into a Super Bowl run for the team that has for so long been so close, but has been unable to reach the final goal. In recent years, Buffalo has often looked like one of the best teams in the league in the regular season, but has fallen in three of the last four years to Kansas City in the playoffs.
If Buffalo is going to reach the Super Bowl this season on the back of a historic season from Josh Allen, the path won't be an easy one, and it'll feature plenty of familiar foes. Based on seeding, here's the most likely path to the Super Bowl for the Buffalo Bills.
I've talked about it all week — the Broncos are a team that shouldn't be taken lightly. Yes, rookie quarterback Bo Nix is inexperienced by NFL standards, but he played a ton of games at the college level. The Denver front is a very tough test, and Denver has the only cornerback in the NFL that I think is better than Christian Benford in Pat Surtain.
With a heavy dose of a ground game, both with Josh Allen and James Cook, and quick passes to minimize the impacts of the Denver front, Buffalo can win this game. Beating Denver sets up a very interesting potential home Divisional Round matchup.
The one team in the NFL that scares me the most in terms of a bad matchup for the Bills is the Baltimore Ravens. The Buffalo defense had zero answers for Derrick Henry when they played back in the early goings of the regular season, with Henry galloping for 199 rushing yards. Buffalo is slated to play their AFC North division rival Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card round, but if they win that game, they would be Buffalo's opponent.
It's not an easy one. The defense will have to play at an incredible level, and Josh will likely need to take over the game on offense. This game being played in Buffalo could make the difference and give the Bills the boost they need to get through.
If Buffalo is going to get to the Super Bowl, it almost certainly will require going to Arrowhead Stadium for an AFC Championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Some might look at this as a tough task, and don't get me wrong, it would be. But it would also provide an opportunity for incredible theater. Buffalo is the only team that beat the Chiefs this season. Imagine Buffalo going into Arrowhead and finally getting past their biggest obstacle, the Chiefs, in order to clinch their spot in the Super Bowl? It would be a dream scenario, and would be the second rematch of the season for the Bills in these playoffs.
The Detroit Lions are the No. 1 seed in the NFC, and they have unquestionably looked like the best team in the conference. In this scenario, Detroit makes it to the big game, setting up a Lake Erie Super Bowl between Detroit and Buffalo. It would be a rematch from an incredibly high-scoring matchup this season. The two combined for 90 points, with Buffalo beating the Lions 48-42.
Rematch road would be complete, with Buffalo having to go through three elite teams to hoist their first Lombardi Trophy in poetic fashion. It would be a storybook ending to an incredible season in Buffalo.
