Washington Commanders tight end Zach Ertz was in the news Thursday for something he’d prefer never to need to discuss. After Sunday’s thrilling 36-33 win over the Eagles, Ertz had a postgame altercation with Philadelphia head coach Nick Sirianni.
No one knows precisely what was said, but Ertz was reportedly not happy with something Sirianni said about his performance in Sunday’s game. Ertz played one week after suffering a concussion in a Week 15 win over the Saints. Ertz caught one pass for 12 yards on two targets.
Philadelphia’s chief security officer stepped in between Sirianni and Ertz, with the coach later apologizing to Ertz.
So, what did Ertz think of the altercation?
“I’m not really going to get into the specifics, but it’s two people that really love to compete, I would say. “Nick and I had a great relationship when I was there, and we still have a great relationship. It’s definitely been blown way out of proportion. We spoke. We’re good. There’s no ill feelings on my part, and I don’t think there are any ill feelings on his part. It’s just something in the heat of the moment that probably got blown out of proportion and maybe a misunderstanding. But him and I are fine. Everyone knows how I feel about that place and that building. But at the same time, I love being here.”
Ertz clearly wanted to squash the story and didn’t see it as a story. He spent eight-and-a-half seasons with the Eagles but only played six games for Sirianni before he was traded in 2021.
The altercation, minor or not, is just the latest incident involving Sirianni, showing a lack of professionalism.
