Warriors Urged to Make Bold Move for Rising 76ers Guard

Quentin Grimes’ free agency is starting to feel like a slow burn. The Philadelphia 76ers guard remains unsigned as August nears, leaving his future up in the air. And while a return to Philly is still the most likely outcome, one NBA writer thinks the Golden State Warriors should start paying closer attention.

FanSided’s Brennan Sims believes Grimes is the type of player who could thrive in the Bay Area. He floated the idea of Jonathan Kuminga’s uncertain contract status playing a role in getting a deal done.

While it would take some front office creativity to make the numbers work, the fit makes sense — especially for a Warriors team still searching for reliable offensive contributors beyond Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler.

Warriors Could Use Another Scoring Punch

If the Warriors want to make a move, they’d have to get creative. Golden State’s cap situation is one of the worst in the league, leaving little flexibility for big swings. Any deal for Grimes would likely need to involve Kuminga going the other way — or require a third team to help facilitate.

Still, the need is clear. Even with Curry and Butler leading the charge, the Warriors lack consistent scoring support behind them. In the second round of the playoffs against Minnesota, the Warriors struggled to generate offense after Curry went down with a hamstring injury. Grimes’ shot-making and instincts could help fill that void and keep the offense afloat when their stars aren’t on the floor.

Grimes isn’t a perfect system fit in Golden State. But he’s a smart, tough shotmaker. He plays with confidence. And competes on both ends. He might not thrive in the Warriors’ famous split-action sets. But he’s capable enough off the catch. And he has the tools to create when the play breaks down.

It’s unclear what it would take to pry him away from Philly. But Sims’ suggestion of involving Kuminga’s contract situation isn’t outlandish. If the Sixers don’t want to pay up. And the Warriors can piece together the right assets. It might be worth exploring.

What’s the Latest With Grimes?

Sixers guard Quentin Grimes

The Sixers have remained interested in bringing Grimes back, but only on the right deal. According to multiple reports, the 24-year-old entered free agency seeking a sizable payday, likely hoping to cash in on his late-season surge. But the Sixers never bit, and no rival teams have stepped up to the plate either.

That’s left Grimes stuck in limbo. The Sixers are still in control of the situation and appear ready to offer a short-term deal if no outside suitors emerge. Grimes impressed during his 28-game stint in Philly last season, averaging 22 points, five rebounds, and five assists while shooting 47% from the field and 37% from deep.

Still, those numbers came during a stretch when the team was shorthanded and out of playoff contention. With Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey all healthy, Grimes would likely play a smaller role next season — which is part of why a long-term commitment hasn’t materialized.

Short-Term Deal Still Most Likely

For now, all signs point to a Grimes return to the Sixers. On a short-term deal. It gives Philly another year to evaluate his long-term fit. And gives Grimes a chance to prove he can produce alongside a healthy core. But the longer this drags out, the more likely it becomes. Another team could make a call.

The Warriors might not be the obvious choice. But they’re rarely out of the conversation when talent becomes available. If Grimes stays unsigned into August, who knows — Golden State could check in.
