Warriors Dealt Concerning News Amid NBA Free Agency Rumors on 5-Time All-Star

The Golden State Warriors have been linked to Al Horford throughout NBA free agency, but it appears the five-time All-Star may be having second thoughts about his future. NBA insider Marc Stein reported on multiple occasions that Horford was expected to sign with Golden State.

Now, this appears far from a certainty as Horford’s NBA future is in doubt. Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach reported that Horford is also considering retirement, meaning the Warriors may once again be in search for another veteran center.

“Horford’s future remains unclear,” Himmelsbach detailed on July 7, 2025, per Bleacher Report. “A league source said Monday that Horford is taking his time while assessing offers from multiple teams but added that the 39-year-old is considering retirement, too.”

Here is what you need to know about the latest Warriors rumors and Horford’s future.

Celtics Center Al Horford Has Been Widely Expected to Sign With the Warriors in NBA Free Agency Rumors

Prior to the latest news, it appeared that the question was when, not if Horford would join Golden State. What appears to be a certainty is that Horford does not plan to re-sign with the Boston Celtics.

“While having the full non-taxpayer midlevel would theoretically provide the Nuggets with the financial flexibility to offer a richer Year 1 salary to Boston Celtics free agent Al Horford that Golden State can pitch, I continue to hear that Horford is destined to land in the Bay Area,” Stein explained in a July 6, story titled, “Sunday Best: LOTS of fresh NBA free agency and trade Intel.”

“That’s despite the fact that the Warriors currently have only the $5.7 million taxpayer midlevel to offer him.”

The Athletic’s Anthony Slater previously reported that the Warriors were waiting on Horford’s decision.

“There’s nothing near the finish line on the Jonathan Kuminga front as the third night of free agency wraps, per sources,” Slater explained in a July 3, message on X. “Conversations ongoing with Warriors and several teams on periphery. Warriors also waiting on Al Horford decision.”

Draymond Green Calls Out NBA for Lack of Excitement in Free Agency

Horford was previously on a two-year, $19.5 million contract with Boston. It remains to be seen what Horford would land with Golden State in a new deal. The Warriors are severely limited in what the team can offer the veteran with Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler all on the books.

Count Green among those surprised by the lack of “fireworks” during the latest round of NBA free agency.

“I’m sitting in my mancave having a conversation with my wife,” Green said in a July 7, post on Threads. “Baffled at the fact that NBA free agency is over. Quite frankly it never really started. The level of anticipation leading up to July 1st were as exciting as the fireworks on the 4th.

“It was the excitement of the NBA Finals yet only a week after watching a team spray champagne and ride on floats. One can only point to the ‘New CBA’ and the 2nd apron (hard cap) for absolutely putting an end to Free Agency.”
