Warriors Blockbuster Trade Pitch Lands $97 Million Center

The Golden State Warriors remain the only team in the NBA that hasn’t made a single trade or signing this offseason. And while their silence has been deafening for fans, there may be more going on behind the scenes.

One key factor holding up the Warriors’ movement is Jonathan Kuminga, whose restricted free agency has created a standstill. Until a resolution is reached—whether through a new deal or a sign-and-trade—it’s tough for Golden State to move with clarity.

Still, the front office is reportedly active behind the scenes, eyeing ways to upgrade the roster around Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green. While veteran Al Horford has been floated as a target, a new trade idea from Derek Parker of the Brooklyn Nets on Sports Illustrated puts the Warriors in play for a younger, longer-term piece: Nic Claxton.

In Parker’s mock deal, the Brooklyn Nets would send Claxton to the Bay in exchange for Buddy Hield and Moses Moody.

Warriors Trade for Claxton in New Proposal

On paper, this isn’t a lopsided trade. Claxton, 26, has quietly established himself as one of the better defensive bigs in the league. He’s averaged 11.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 2.0 blocks over his last three seasons, anchoring the Nets’ interior while shooting over 63% from the field.

He’s also under contract on a descending four-year, $97 million deal—costly, but arguably fair given his consistent production. And for a Warriors team sorely lacking rim protection and verticality, he could be exactly what they need.

Costly but Worth It?

Nic Claxton, Brook Lopez, Lakers

To get Claxton, the Warriors would have to give up two key pieces of their bench. Moody, 23, is a promising young wing. He’s flashed strong two-way upside. Hield brings elite spacing. And valuable experience.

Losing either would sting. Losing both might feel steep. But for a team in win-now mode, with aging stars, plugging the glaring hole at center may take priority. Bench preservation comes second.

Claxton’s mobility. His shot-blocking. His efficiency around the rim. All would give the Warriors a legitimate presence in the paint—something they’ve sorely lacked. Kevon Looney’s departure this summer leaves a gaping hole at center. Claxton is a better fit for the modern NBA than most traditional bigs. And his youth means he could be a piece for the post-Curry era as well.

A Path Forward

There’s no indication this deal is currently on the table. Or that Brooklyn would consider it. But it’s the kind of bold, calculated swing the Warriors should be entertaining.

The Warriors can’t afford to stand pat this offseason. The Western Conference is only getting deeper. And with Curry still playing at an elite level, wasting another season of his prime simply isn’t an option.
