Veteran RB reunion with Vikings GM feels too perfect to ignore

Free-Agent RB Nick Chubb

After the Minnesota Vikings didn't use any of their five selections in the 2025 NFL Draft on a running back, most assumed at least one of the team's undrafted signings would result in a new addition to their offensive backfield. That assumption turned out to be correct, as former Jacksonville State running back Tre Stewart was among the undrafted players signed by the Vikings on Saturday.

With Saturday's signing, Minnesota's running back group now consists of Stewart, Aaron Jones, Jordan Mason, Ty Chandler, and Zavier Scott. Jones and Mason are clearly leading the pack, but the Vikings might run into some problems next season if either one of them has to miss any time.

So, that brings us to free-agent running back Nick Chubb. A four-time Pro Bowl running back who spent two of his seven years as a member of the Cleveland Browns with current Minnesota general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah working in the team's front office.

Signing former Cleveland Browns RB Nick Chubb would fit with what the Minnesota Vikings want to do on offense in 2025

For the first time in his NFL career, Chubb is a free agent this year, and he's still looking for a team to play for. Depending on what sort of role he's hoping to have for a team next season, the Vikings and Adofo-Mensah should at least check in and see if he's interested in joining their locker room this year.

After suffering a serious knee injury early in the 2023 season, Chubb has only appeared in a total of 10 games since the start of the 2023 campaign. But before that, he earned four-straight trips to the Pro Bowl by averaging 1,336 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground per season between 2019 and 2022.

At 5-foot-11 and 227 pounds, Chubb is a physical rusher that defenders have struggled to bring down throughout his pro career. His bruising style fits in with what Minnesota wants from its rushing attack next season.

The Vikings struggled significantly to run the ball near the goal line and in short-yardage situations last year, and having guys like Mason and Chubb in the team's backfield would certainly help improve that aspect of their offense.

If the price to sign Chubb isn't something outrageous, then attempting to add him to its roster is something Minnesota should seriously consider before the start of the 2025 season.
