Troy Franklin could be facing a ‘redshirt’ year with the Denver Broncos in 2024

Troy Franklin’s performance in his second preseason game was pretty much a repeat of the first. He didn’t do a whole lot.

The Denver Broncos rookie wide receiver didn’t catch a pass during his time on the field and he wasn’t targeted once in the game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. Franklin’s day was somewhat similar to his first preseason game. He didn’t catch a pass, though he was targeted once.

It’s been that kind of training camp and preseason for Franklin, the team’s fourth-round pick (No. 102) in the 2024 draft. Franklin entered camp with plenty of hype, but he reportedly has been very inconsistent in camp and fallen down to the near the bottom of the depth chart.

The Broncos like his skillset and aren’t going to give up on him, but Cody Roark of MileHighSports.com speculates that the team could “redshirt” Franklin and/or limit him to special teams play – at least early in the 2024 season.

Despite having a quiet training camp amidst reports of struggles, the team is invested in Troy Franklin’s continued development, and they are in a position where they don’t need him to be a number one, two, or three right away as a rookie. He’ll likely redshirt or play some special teams.”

Roark’s reasoning is the Broncos have plenty of talent at the position with Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims, Tim Patrick, Josh Reynolds, Jalen Vigil and Devaughn Vele. They don’t need Franklin to develop right away as a rookie and can take it slow with Franklin, give him time and look toward the future.
