Trey Smith extension now feels like a done deal for Chiefs fans

We're all about properly sourced news around here, and for the most part, we'd never want to indulge a random account on the internet just firing off with random takes or uneducated guesses or, even worse, trolling for attention. But when it comes to an account known as Rickey (@SlickRickScoops) on Twitter (X is a horrible name), there's no denying he's got an insider's view.

Kansas City Chiefs v Las Vegas Raiders

If you're already an NFL fan on social media, then Rickey will already be a familiar follow. He's had a knack for getting some things right before anyone else, including the George Pickens trade between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys. Most recently, he also scooped the Jalen Ramsey trade between the Steelers and Miami Dolphins.

As for Rickey's latest predictions, a series of contract extensions are expected on multiple fronts, he recently posted, including a long-term contract extension between the Kansas City Chiefs and guard Trey Smith.

Now, anyone in Chiefs Kingdom would be able to project the same thing. Trey Smith was handed the franchise tag by the Chiefs this offseason in a short-term maneuver intended to keep him from reaching the open market. The team also traded Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears to free up the financial resources to keep him. There's no mystery at all here.

Even further, the Chiefs have stated all along that they intend to give him a long-term contract. Smith, for his part, has played along by coming to mandatory minicamp on the tag. He's also said all the right things along the way about being in Kansas City for the long haul.

In other words, Rickey (and anyone else) is only saying what is already widely known. It would be a major upset if Smith and the Chiefs didn't reach a long-term extension. And that date of July 15 is the NFL's mandated deadline for the two sides to come to an agreement or else wait until after the season to negotiate again.

But just in case anyone is nervous that an extension has not yet been reached between the Chiefs and Smith, Rickey's report offers a bit more reassurance that the path will be taken. Not every guess has come true, but the track record here is worth mentioning. In this instance, Smith will reset the guard market. (But that was going to happen no matter what Rickey said.)
