Top NHL Insider Updates Connor McDavid's Difficult Contract Negotiations in Edmonton

Connor McDavid appears ready to re-sign with the Oilers, but according to Frank Seravalli, he and the team are yet to get deep in contract negotiations.

The Edmonton Oilers have fallen in the Stanley Cup Finals for two straight seasons, but coming into the off-season, their fans had much more to worry about, with captain and superstar forward Connor McDavid set to be a free agent in the summer of 2026.

Most have expected him to re-sign with the Oilers before it gets that far, but in Frank Seravalli's latest report, the two parties have not yet gotten that far into negotiations this off-season.

However, that doesn't change the league wide expectation that he will sign an extension with the team at some point, with Seravalli among others noting however that it will more likely than not be a short term (3-4 years) deal than a long-term extension.

Over the past five seasons, McDavid has tallied 100 or more points in every single campaign for the Oilers, and in the post-season his play goes to another level entirely, tallying 75 points in his last 45 Stanley Cup Playoffs games over the last two years.

Unsurprisingly, that means the Oilers will do whatever they can to keep their star captain, meaning they'll likely need to make him the highest paid player in the NHL, but with the organization on the verge of their sixth ever Stanley Cup, it's the price they need to pay.

Ultimately, a deal will likely get done at some point before the 2025/26 regular season begins, but as of right now nothing significant has begun between the team and McDavid, and after he dealt with plenty of weddings in the past few weeks, it's easy to see why, with no one yet worried that a deal won't get done soon.
